The 28th Australian Goanna Pulling Championships have come and gone – and were declared a big success.

Traditionally held on the first Sunday of October, this year’s event took place at the Wooli Sportsground on a beautifully sunny Sunday, the 5th of October 2014.

In addition to the quirky national championships which drew contestants from across the Eastern Seaboard, there were plenty of other family-friendly activities and attractions to keep visitors occupied. [Read more…]

Goanna Pulling Contest featured in UK newspaper

The Australian Goanna Pulling Championships, held annually in Wooli NSW, were featured in the United Kingdom’s second biggest-selling daily newspaper earlier this year.

Goanna Pulling Championships Wooli Australia featured in UK Daily Mail The UK’s Daily Mail, which gets more than 100 million unique visitors to its website each month, posted a photo story about this quirky Australian event in February 2014.

Headlined “Aussie rules Tug-o-War: Goanna Pulling championship kicks off as contestants go head-to-head to see who has the strongest neck”, the feature briefly goes into the facts and explains the main rules of the competition. The short story is followed by a range of great photos showing contestants in action.

Surfing & Camping at Illaroo (Video)

Illaroo Campground in Yuraygir National Park, just outside of Minnie Water on the NSW North Coast, is a beautiful camping spot overlooking pristine Sandon Beach. It is popular among independent travellers and surfers – but only those who know about it!

Sydney Weekender reporter Mel Symons and the travel show’s TV crew visited Wooli and Minnie Water to film a segment for this popular Channel 7 television show in the winter of 2013.

The 4-minute segment, which first aired on Saturday 21 September 2013, was part of a series on the Legendary Pacific Coast.

Highlights of this Clarence Coast episode were Yuraygir National Park, the birds and views at Minnie Water, accommodation at Wooli’s Solitary Islands Marine Park resort, kayaking in the Wooli Wooli River and the fresh, succulent oysters from Wooli Oyster Supply – recognised as some of the best in all of Australia.
